Vaccines

Are your pets due — or overdue — for vaccines? Having this protection helps keep them safe from multiple diseases that can cause serious illness or even death. Vaccinations are a routine and important part of pet care.

Cat getting a vaccine

Do you need a vet near you for non-core and/or core vaccines? At Bixby Animal Hospital and Urgent Care in Torrance, CA, we offer these pet care services. Let’s go over what makes vaccinations so important — and which ones to have your pets get!

What Vaccines Do Cats and Dogs Need?

Some of that depends on your pet’s lifestyle. But others are required. Core vaccines are ones all pets should get, such as:

•           Rabies for dogs and cats

•           Canine distemper

•           Canine parvovirus

•           Infectious canine hepatitis

•           Feline panleukopenia

•           Feline rhinotracheitis

•           Feline calicivirus

Non-core vaccinations are ones only some pets need, based on where they spend their time, whether they’re around other pets — and other factors. Examples of these include:

•           Bordetella (kennel cough)

•           Leptospirosis

•           Canine influenza

•           Feline leukemia

Our veterinarian can tell you which ones your own pets need or should get for optimal protection at their next wellness exam — or sooner!

Why Are Pet Vaccinations Important?

Did you know that rabies doesn’t have a cure? And some other infectious diseases can cause complications that become life-threatening? The good news is having your pets receive vaccinations against these helps their immune system learn to handle these pathogens.

These shots contain either dead or weakened versions. They don’t make your pet sick — but they do protect them from serious illness.

Are Dog and Cat Vaccines Safe?

Yes! They’re safe for most pets. Your pets might be sore and tired after their injections, but this is temporary. We can go over possible reactions or side effects with you to ease your mind — or discuss any other concerns you have.

When to Have Pets Vaccinated

You can have this done during your pet’s wellness exam or whenever it’s convenient for you. Vaccination schedules generally include:

•           6-8 weeks: First shots for puppies and kittens

•           Booster shots during the first year as needed

•           Annual vaccines
